The most common mistake when booking accommodation for an interview is treating it as a two-day trip. In practice, five days to three weeks pass between arrival and getting the passport back with the visa: first the medical exam, then the interview, then the wait for the passport. Accommodation has to fit that whole route, not just interview day.
This piece is current as of 2 October 2026.
I have no affiliation with any hotel or service mentioned here and receive nothing for mentioning them.
The short version
- Book for the full cycle: medical exam, interview, and 2 to 5 business days for the passport. Passports are not returned on weekends or holidays, U.S. or local.
- Choose free cancellation or the option to extend. In applicant experience, the timeline almost always shifts.
- Interviews are scheduled early, as early as 7:40 in Almaty. If the embassy is far from the centre, stay near it or budget time for a taxi.
- The medical exam is almost always on the other side of town, and the X-ray is sometimes at a third clinic. Put all three addresses on the map.
- Russian bank cards do not work abroad. Applicants book through Ostrovok, Yandex Travel or OneTwoTrip, through Booking with pay-at-property, or with a fiancé's or husband's card. Cash in dollars or euros is needed almost everywhere.
- Check registration rules. In Serbia registration is mandatory within 24 hours; in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan it is required for longer stays.
- Do not prepay private landlords before you arrive. In Almaty in 2026, hosts twice tried to swap the advertised apartment for another one.
Warsaw, Poland

Embassy. Piękna Street 12, city centre, Śródmieście district. Entrance from Piękna. Google Maps lists the building as Al. Ujazdowskie 29/31.
Medical exam. The panel physician sees applicants in Wilanów in the south of the city, on Kosiarzy Street. X-ray and blood work are at a separate clinic in the centre, 20 to 30 minutes apart by taxi.
Where people stay. Most applicants stay within walking distance of the embassy in Śródmieście. Chat members named these hotels: Mercure Warszawa Grand (about 5 minutes on foot), Novotel (about 7 minutes), Ibis Styles Centrum (about 20 minutes), Metropol and Sheraton. Many rent apartments or studios on Airbnb or Booking near the embassy and Central Station. One couple who stayed in apartments in Sadyba near Wilanów took a 15-minute taxi to the embassy and found the morning traffic manageable.

How long to book. Arrive 3 to 5 days before the interview if the medical exam is in Warsaw, and book at least 2 full business days after the interview with the option to extend. In applicant experience, the passport comes back in 1 to 5 business days.
Registration. No self-registration is needed for a short trip. Foreigners must register only for stays longer than 30 days.
Good to know. There is nowhere to wait near the embassy: the street is busy and cafés open late. Companions are not allowed inside, so children and the petitioner are better off waiting at the accommodation. Taxis are Bolt and Uber with a foreign card attached. Per reports, Russian citizens check in to Warsaw hotels without problems.

Almaty and Astana, Kazakhstan

Consulate. Immigrant visas are handled by the Consulate General in Almaty: 97 Zholdasbekov Street, Samal Towers business centre, Samal-2 district. Per the consulate's instructions, use Entrance A2 and arrive 20 minutes before your appointment. Almaty is officially designated for IR-5 visas (parents of U.S. citizens) for residents of Russia. For nonimmigrant visas, Russians are assigned to the embassy in Astana as well as Warsaw.
Medical exam. IMC clinic at 235 Mukanov Street. Before the exam applicants take a TB blood test at a separate lab (Gamma Lab, per reports), with results in 1 to 3 days. The X-ray is at a third clinic, 20 to 30 minutes by taxi. Per 2025 to 2026 reports the exam cost about 150,000 tenge and the TB test about 45,000 tenge.
Where people stay. Most often near the consulate in Samal, because interviews are scheduled for 7:40 to 8:30. Chat members named the Grand Eurasia (across the road from the consulate), Kazakhstan, Alma and East Palace. Many rent apartments by the night; there are plenty of hotels, studios and apartments for rent near the consulate. In Astana one applicant stayed at Hostel Americana, 12 minutes' walk from the embassy.

How long to book. Per 2025 to 2026 reports, many arrived a week before the interview: TB test, the medical exam 2 to 3 days later, the interview a few days after that. Per applicant reports, the passport is usually ready 2 to 3 business days after the interview. The consulate's instructions are more cautious: usually within a week. Count both U.S. and Kazakh holidays: in July 2025 they added three days to one applicant's wait.
Registration. Russian citizens may stay in Kazakhstan without registration for up to 30 days, and no more than 90 days in any 180. Since 1 July 2026, registration for stays over 30 days goes through a new digital system, and the host (hotel or landlord) confirms it in an app.
How to book. Krisha.kz for short- and long-term rentals, Booking (often with cash on check-in), Airbnb. One applicant booked the Grand Eurasia through Yandex Travel and was charged in full by card a week before arrival. In February 2026 a couple booked an apartment through Ostrovok to pay in cash, and twice the hosts tried to swap it for "another one just as good." Chat members advise not sending money before check-in. A Kazakh bank card, or Google Pay with a husband's card, makes things much easier. There are plenty of exchange offices.

Yerevan, Armenia

Embassy. 1 American Avenue, on the edge of the city towards the airport. Not walkable from the centre; you need a taxi.
Medical exam. Normed Medical Center, 12/6 Nersisyan Street, Zeytun district, also outside the centre. Per the embassy's instructions (March 2026), the exam must be done at least two weeks before the interview, so either arrive early or make two trips. The basic exam is 50,000 AMD, with X-ray and lab tests charged separately.
Where people stay. Most stay in the centre and take a taxi to the embassy; taxis in Yerevan are inexpensive. Chat members praised the Holiday Inn on Republic Square (with a good exchange office nearby) and the Boulevard hotel near the square. Apartments are found on Booking and the local listings site list.am. Some applicants stay with relatives.

Good to know. In 2023 an applicant booked a hotel through Ostrovok with a Russian card, only to find on arrival that the hotel took cash only, and he had to withdraw it from an ATM at a poor rate. Members say reviews of budget hotels on aggregators can be inflated. Per the embassy's instructions, passports with visas are returned by courier only, usually 1 to 2 weeks after approval. You do not have to wait in Yerevan: in 2025 an applicant handed in her passport and left, and the visa arrived later. Per the instructions, the petitioner may accompany a fiancée or wife to the interview.
Registration. Russian citizens need no separate registration for short trips. Visa-free stays of up to 180 days a year are allowed.

Belgrade, Serbia

Embassy. 92 Bulevar kneza Aleksandra Karađorđevića, Dedinje. A green residential area south of the centre, 10 to 15 minutes by taxi from the old town.
Medical exam. Clinic at 22 Smiljanićeva Street, Vračar. Results the same day, per reports. A second option is IOM Belgrade, 19 Žorža Klemansoa Street. Per the embassy's instructions (August 2026), if you travel to the interview from Russia you may do the exam at IOM Moscow, so you do not need to arrive in Belgrade early.
Where people stay. In the centre: the old town, the pedestrian street, Republic Square, Vračar. Many rent apartments on Airbnb and Booking. In 2022 to 2024 some applicants lived in Novi Sad, where housing is cheaper, 35 minutes by train from Belgrade. Members called the new Waterfront district nice but expensive.
Chat members did not name hotels here, so I picked these myself: close to the embassy or the medical clinic and well rated by guests. Distances are straight-line on the map. I am not affiliated with any of them.

Registration is mandatory. A foreigner must be registered at their place of stay (the "white card", beli karton) within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels and licensed apartments do this online themselves and send a confirmation. If you rent from a private individual, the owner has to go to the police with you. Per applicants this takes about 15 minutes, and no lease is needed. Discuss registration with the host before booking. Chat members warned that fines for not registering have gone up. Spoiling your police record before getting a U.S. visa is the last thing you need.
Good to know. Russian citizens may stay in Serbia visa-free for up to 30 days. Per a 2024 report, the embassy handed passports with visas to DHL: sent on Monday, collected on Thursday. The petitioner may attend the interview with the embassy's prior approval.

Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Embassy. 3 Moyqorghon Street, Yunusabad district.
Medical exam. Tashkent International Clinic, 38 Sarikulskaya Street. In applicant experience, exams done elsewhere, including Warsaw, are not accepted in Tashkent. The embassy recommends booking at least three weeks before the interview, and the clinic takes payment in advance ($165 in 2023).
Little data. The Tashkent embassy is officially designated for IR-5 visas (parents of U.S. citizens) for residents of Russia. For other categories, in applicant experience, Russians without residence are rarely sent there. The Uzbekistan thread has only 63 messages.
What is known. Registration at the place of stay is done by the hotel or apartment owner on the emehmon.uz portal. Russian citizens are exempt for the first 15 days, but for longer stays it must be done no later than day 15 and still be valid on departure. Taxis (Yandex Go) are cheap per reports, while private drivers overcharge. SIM cards are sold and installed at the airport, and everyone speaks Russian. Russian cards do not work, though some ATMs accept Mir for cash withdrawals. Bring dollars and exchange them for som. In 2023 the passport with an IR-5 visa came back a week after the interview.

Tbilisi, Georgia

Embassy. 29 Georgian-American Friendship Avenue, Didi Dighomi, on the northern edge of the city. A taxi ride from the centre.
Medical exam. Medical Center CITO, 40 Paliashvili Street, Vake. Per the embassy's instructions (July 2026), the exam costs from $220 for applicants over 15. Passports with visas are returned by courier only.
Where people stay. Vake or Saburtalo are most convenient: close to the clinic and 15 to 25 minutes by taxi to the embassy. Members named almost no specific hotels. Most applicants interviewed in Tbilisi had lived in Georgia for a long time and rented by the month.

Registration. Russian citizens need no visa, may stay up to a year and do not need to register.
Good to know. Per 2023 to 2024 reports, 9 to 12 months passed between DQ and the interview in Tbilisi. If you are living there while you wait, budget for monthly rent, not a hotel.

Booking and payment: what works in 2026

From chat members' experience:
- Ostrovok, Yandex Travel, OneTwoTrip and Russian bank apps accept Russian cards. But the hotel may still demand cash on arrival, and a private host may try to swap the apartment.
- Booking: look for pay-at-property. This works in all six countries.
- Airbnb is not available to Russians directly. Usually the fiancé or husband books with his card and lists the applicant as a guest.
- Local sites: krisha.kz in Kazakhstan, list.am in Armenia. Here it is especially important not to pay before check-in.
- Points: if your fiancé or husband has a credit card with hotel rewards, the stay can be paid in points.
- Cash: bring dollars or euros. A local bank card (Kazakhstan, Armenia, Uzbekistan) makes paying for taxis and cafés easier.
A Schengen visa booking is not the same thing
If you are travelling to Warsaw through another Schengen country, the accommodation booking for the visa is in the issuing country, and that is what you show at the border. The Warsaw booking is separate and real. I covered the route in detail in the article on entering Poland through Schengen. Do not mix up the two bookings, and do not show the Warsaw booking to the border officer of the issuing country.
What to do now

If the interview date is not set yet
- Find the embassy and medical clinic addresses on your post's page and mark both on a map.
- Look at the neighbourhoods between them and current two-week prices on Booking or Airbnb.
- Decide who pays and how: fiancé's or husband's card, cash, a local card.
If you already have an interview date
- Book the medical exam right away. Your arrival date depends on it.
- Book accommodation with free cancellation, from arrival to 2 to 5 business days after the interview.
- If the city requires registration, choose a hotel or host who handles it. In Serbia, within the first 24 hours.
- Do a trial trip to the embassy the day before the interview, at the same time of day.
If you will be waiting a long time (Tbilisi, sometimes Almaty)
- Budget for monthly, not nightly, rent. Search local sites, but pay only after you move in.
- Check the maximum stay and registration rules: in Kazakhstan, 90 days in any 180.
